The call was made by Fianna Fáil councillor Brian Dooley at the latest Athy Municipal District (MD) meeting, which took place on Monday, October 12 last.

During the early stages of this meeting, the Mayor of the MD, Labour Party Cllr Mark Leigh, motioned for Kildare County Council (KCC) to make some changes to the mini roundabout on Leinster Street in Athy.

According to Mayor Leigh, he wanted these changes implemented in order ‘to make it more visible’, as well as to ‘prevent encroachment’.

Speaking further on the matter, Mayor Leigh claimed that he was aware of ‘near accidents’ at this location.

Cllr Dooley also spoke directly after Mayor Leigh — he told KCC: “There seems to be an inherent desire for those driving on the Lidl side of the road to speed up and cut off everyone’.

“They think they are in Mondello,” Cllr Dooley added. “For the people coming into town, they don’t know what they are getting into.”

He concluded by calling on motorists to ‘show a bit of respect’ while driving through this region.
