WNS reporter With Halloween approaching, Waterford City and County Council is urging the public to stay safe around bonfires and reminding businesses not to provide waste material to anyone without a valid waste collection permit.

Chief Fire Officer Niall Curtin said Halloween is one of the busiest times of the year for the fire service, with Waterford brigades attending 33 bonfires and outdoor fires during last year's Halloween period.

“Bonfires have the potential to harm people with burns, inhalation of toxic fumes and injury from exploding cylinders and cannisters,” he said. “Every year we see community and amenity areas badly damaged in the aftermath of such fires.” The council is advising parents to supervise children around fires, stay away from smoke and ensure candles and decorative lighting are used safely. Residents are also encouraged to test smoke alarms in their homes.

Mr Curtin also appealed for cooperation with emergency crews.

“Please allow our brigades to carry out their jobs safely,” he said. “For any fire emergencies over the Halloween period dial 112 or 999 and ask for the Fire Service immediately.”
