Unpaid Letterkenny fixed charge notices proves costly

A string of motorists who did not pay fixed charge parking notices found themselves significantly out of pocket at Letterkenny District Court on Monday, with fines and costs far exceeding what they would have paid had they settled up from the start.

The cases came before Judge Emile Daly for a range of parking offences including failing to display a valid tax disc, parking without a ticket, and parking in a taxi bay. In each case, the decision not to pay the original fixed penalty only deepened the financial penalties.

Perhaps the most ironic case of the day involved Letterkenny man Joseph Kennedy, of The Green, Ballymacool, who received his fixed charge notice for failing to display a tax disc while parked on the grounds of Letterkenny Courthouse itself on October 23, 2025. Kennedy failed to pay arrears of €57 and Judge Daly convicted and fined him €200 with four months to pay, along with €138 in costs.

A Galway man, Neil Redmond of Knock Avon House, Salthill Lower, fared no better. He had been issued a fixed charge notice for parking on Justice Walsh Road, Letterkenny on October 30, 2025 without a valid tax disc displayed. With the notice remaining unpaid, Judge Daly convicted and fined him €250 with four months to pay and costs of €138.

Letterkenny woman Nadine Harkin of Leitirbeag was fined €120 with four months to pay, plus €138 in costs, after a fixed charge notice for parking without a ticket on October 10, 2025 went unsettled.

Bundoran man Charlie Ward, of Bunholvil, had the same fate for a different reason. Ward had parked in a taxi bay on Lower Main Street, Letterkenny on December 1, 2025 and similarly failed to pay his fixed charge notice. Judge Daly convicted and fined him €120 with four months to pay and ordered €138 in costs.

In every case before the court on Monday, the failure to pay a fixed charge notice resulted in a court conviction, a significantly higher fine, and an additional €138 in costs, a stark reminder that ignoring a fixed penalty notice is rarely a winning strategy.
