Man jailed following ‘nasty assault’ of his partner in Limerick estate

Published 30th May 2026, 14:30 BST Limerick Courthouse Mulgrave Street Court told defendant was armed with a piece of wood and began threatening the woman. A man has received a three-and-a-half year prison sentence for harming his ex-partner in an estate in Limerick.

Imposing sentence at Limerick Circuit Court , Judge Colin Daly said the man and the woman were in an intimate relationship and he noted their children were taken into care at the time of the offence.

The accused cannot be identified to protect the anonymity of the victim and their children.

The court heard the man had been drinking on the night of the incident. He was armed with a piece of wood, and began threatening the woman.

The man became aggressive, and injured the woman in what the judge described as a “nasty assault”. The victim alerted a neighbour to her injury, and over the course of the evening ten neighbours came to assist the woman.

The assault left the woman with suturing, which led to scarring, and a scratch mark on her head and her arm.

In the assault, the man contravened a safety order that the woman took out against him, which Judge Daly said was an aggravating factor in his sentencing. The judge said the man made a guilty plea, but he entered the plea at the latest possible stage.

Judge Daly said the man was intoxicated on the night in question, and appears now to have a desire to re-enter rehab.

The judge went on to impose a three and a half years’ sentence on the man with the final six months suspended for the assault causing harm. The charge for possession of an article was taken into consideration. For contravention of a safety order, the man received a ten months’ sentence which is to run concurrent to his three year sentence. The judge mandated that the man keep the peace, be of good behaviour, and liaise with the probation service for one year after his release.
