Need for playground in Manorcunningham highlighted - Donegal News

The need for a children’s playground in Manorcunningham was highlighted at a recent council meeting.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Donal Coyle raised the issue at the May meeting of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.

He asked: “That this Council identify an appropriate section of land in Manorcunningham for the purpose of providing a playground.”

Cllr Coyle outlined that Manorcunningham is Donegal’s youngest town, with an average age of 33.3 according to the 2022 census.

The council heard that there is currently a playground in Abbey Park housing estate in Manorcunningham.

However, Cllr Coyle said it is small and he appealed to the council to acquire land for a more adequate facility.

His party colleague, Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly, seconded the motion and added that Manorcunningham is a growing village with a “massive need” for a playground.

In the written response, Cllr Coyle was informed: “There currently isn’t any funding available to acquire or lease any lands in Manorcunningham to facilitate such a community facility.

“Indeed, if a suitable site with adequate parking provision was to become available, planning permission would need to be secured together with an appropriate level of funding to construct a modern playground.”

Senior Executive Engineer (Roads) David McIlwaine said he would raise the issue again with the divisional manager.
