A local business has teamed up with Monaghan Tidy Towns to help tackle the scourge that is single use coffee cups.

Genesis Café and Monaghan Tidy Towns have launched an initiative to help address the single-use coffee cup problem.

According to Chairperson of the local group, Emer Brennan says these items are one of the most persistent litter items volunteers are finding on a regular basis.

Genesis Café and MTT are teaming up with 2GoCup to raise awareness of the financial and environmental benefits of reusable coffee cups.

The project aims to increase the circulation of reusable cups in Monaghan and promote more circular economy practices while also reducing litter.

An estimated 500,000 single use coffee cups are consumed in Ireland each day and Emer says the volume of coffee cup litter we encounter on a weekly basis is frustrating.

Kevin McGuire of Genesis Cafe says single use cups cost business and our environment and this initiative will also create conversations around sustainability and the circular economy. The 2goCup project works on a deposit and return basis. A small €2 refundable deposit is charged to the customer on their initial purchase, and the customer can claim this back or swap for a fresh clean cup when they next visit the café.

Emer Brennan from Monaghan Tidy towns outlines how important this initiative is for the are and the outlines the many benefits that it will bring to Monaghan.

Ronan Gargan was in Monaghan Town to meet with both Emer and Kevin who both say there is a plethora of benefits to this initiative and they hope it can help Monaghan to be a ‘cleaner’ and ‘greener’ town to visit, live and work in.
