Funding of €1 million has been granted to Laois to address the damage caused by Storm Chandra earlier this year.

On Wednesday, June 1, the Department of Transport announced funding of €40 million to address the damage caused to regional and local roads by Storm Chandra, of which Laois has been allocated €1 million.

An assessment was carried out in March which found that 130 roads across the country required complete reconstruction and over 440 had significant damage following Storm Chandra in January. Several bridge structures were also damaged and made impassable.

This funding will help Laois County Council to undertake necessary work to restore regional and local roads in the county.

This funding is on top of the €31 million that will be spent on upgrading and maintaining the road network in County Laois this year.

Laois County Council published the €31 million Roadworks Scheme for 2026 back in April. At the time, the council noted the extensive damage that had been caused by Storm Chandra across Laois.

"The Roadworks Scheme 2026 is presented against the backdrop of a challenging winter for the road network, with an upturn in potholes and general storm damage. Significant resources from the Roadworks Scheme 2026 will be targeted towards remedying the adverse impacts of winter," Laois County Council said.

In comparison to Laois, some neighbouring counties have received more than double the funding that was announced on Wednesday by the Department of Transport.

Carlow has received €2.79 million, while Kilkenny has been allocated €3.46 million.

Announcing the package, Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien, said: “I am pleased to announce the provision of €40 million in exceptional additional funding to facilitate the repair of our regional and local roads after the impact of Storm Chandra.

“Extreme weather events leave significant damage in its wake and the Government is committed to supporting our local authorities to ensure the condition of our road network is maintained.”
