Four men appear in court to face charges after alleged assault in Mayo

Four men have appeared in Castlebar District Court today to face charges in relation to an alleged serious assault which took place in the county town last year.

Davitt Neary (23) of Shanvalley, Breaffy Woods, Castlebar; Rhys Neary (18) of Shanvalley, Breaffy Woods, Castlebar and Paul Dowding (24) of Frenchhill, Castlebar appeared before Castlebar District Court where they were charged with assault causing harm and violent disorder in relation to the incident which took place on Tucker Street, Castlebar in the early hours of Saturday, August 23, 2025. A fourth man, Oran Groarke (23) of Ballynew, Turlough Road, Castlebar was charged with violent disorder.

Detective Garda Roisin Loftus told Judge Vincent Deane that she arrested and charged Davitt Neary and Rhys Neary earlier this morning before the court sitting. Detective Garda John Flannery told Judge Deane he arrested and charged Paul Dowding and Detective Garda William Grant told Judge Deane he arrested and charged Oran Groarke. No replies were made to the charges.

Court presenter, Sergeant Fiona Farrell, said that the DPP had directed trial on indictment in the circuit court and her application was for all four to be remanded on bail to appear before Castlebar District Court on July 1 for service of books of evidence.

Mr Thomas Walsh, solicitor for Davitt Neary, asked for the issue of legal aid to be deferred to the next court sitting. Legal aid was granted for the three other defendants.

Judge Deane remanded all four men on bail to appear before Castlebar District Court on July 1.
