Laois County Council has been called to step in to help prevent a local pub from persistent flooding.
Councillor Conor Bergin requested Laois County Council to address the surface water and drainage issues at the Green Roads pub in Ballybrophy.
Speaking at the July meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick MD, Cllr Bergin said that in recent weeks he has met with the Drennan family who own the pub as well as officials from Laois County Council to assess the ongoing issues at the site.
In the event of any bad weather or heavy rainfall, water from the road seeps down into the pub.
The road is slightly above the pub itself and the road verge is just a couple of metres from the pub’s entrance, Cllr Bergin explained.
He noted: “The water is running off the road and into the pub and the water has actually come in the door on some occasions.”
“In addition, there’s splashing from all of the vehicles on the road because it’s quite a busy road and that’s damaging the paint on the pub.”

The Fine Gael councillor emphasised that it is important for the council to give any support they can to the family-run business and especially considering the number of pubs that have closed in Laois through the years.
He suggested that a gully or drain could be a possible solution to the issue.
The motion was widely supported by fellow councillors, with Cllr James Kelly adding that he has often seen sandbags outside the pub which is “not good for business.”
The MD Office has met with the owners of the Green Roads pubs and has given a commitment to address the surface water and drainage issues at the location.
