KCC says footpath installation would involve 'substantial' work

The suggestion was previously pitched to KCC back in 2019

Kildare County Council (KCC) has said that the installation of a footpath 'would involve a substantial land take and design'.

The announcement was heard at the latest Athy Municipal District (MD) meeting, which took place on Monday, May 18 last.

It was given in response to a motion which was submitted by Fianna Fáil councillor Veralouise Behan, in which she requested KCC to install a footpath between Nurney Village and Nurney Gaelic Football Club (GFC).

According to Cllr Behan, the provision of a footpath in this location ‘would be helpful for kids going to Nurney GFC.’

Fianna Fáil Cllr Veralouise Behan | Photograph credit: kildarecoco.ie In response to Cllr Behan’s motion, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: “This would involve a substantial land take and design, and a source of funding would have to be identified first.”

Speaking further on her motion, Cllr Behan noted that a similar motion was previously submitted back in 2019 by a separate councillor.

She added: “I am confident that we can find the funding necessary for the footpath [in the near future].”

Cllr Breslin then expressed her support for the motion, and suggested to KCC: “Could we look into Active Travel funding [for the proposed footpath]?”

She also thanked the local MD team for its work at a separate County Kildare region.
