Good news for east Donegal community’s road campaign - Donegal News

ACTION will be taken on a road in east Donegal that has been the subject of community uproar.

Donegal County Council has said it may be able to provide lay-bys on the L-23742 Back Lone Road in St Johnston.

This week, the Donegal News reported that the road has seen cars entering ditches as motorists are forced to reverse up to 300 metres back for oncoming traffic.

Alice Lynch, owner of Maggies Tavern at Carrickmore, St Johnston, has collected around 500 signatures on a petition from concerned locals calling for action.

“If there were lay-bys we would be happy enough,” Alice told the Donegal News.

The council has now issued an official response to the issue.

It reads: “The L-23742 is a Local Rural Road and is suitable for local traffic.

“It is understood the issue is in relation to vehicles meeting reversing.

“The Local Authority does not have specific budgets for provision of lay-bys, however lay-bys have been provided on other local roads under Community Involvement Schemes.

“Should an application be made to Donegal County Council under this measure then same can be given due consideration.
