Laois County Council plans on acquiring more land to complete ongoing works in the cemetery in Timahoe .

A small piece of land situated to the north of the cemetery in Timahoe will be acquired by Laois County Council for the purpose of establishing a new non-public entrance to the cemetery.

The entrance off the main road will allow access to the back of the cemetery for contractors and Laois County Council personnel.

Laois County Council said the scope of the works proposed at the cemetery includes the encasement of the current boundary wall, railings and entrance in addition to drainage that’s needed for the cemetery.

In October of last year, land was also purchased to extend the Timahoe cemetery which allowed for 44 more graves.

Councillor Paschal McEvoy has welcomed the news, noting that the developments at the cemetery have been ongoing for a long number of years.

“The wall facing out onto the road and the entrance is in an awful bad state. That’s being replaced so we’re happy to get that done,” Cllr McEvoy said.

“The overall scope of the work is going to be an excellent job. It was badly needed.”

Cllr Elva Kelly also welcomed the development and noted that people have contacted her recently regarding the state of the current entrance.

She also acknowledged the great work that has already been done at the cemetery.
