Twin Towns footpaths blamed for ’serious’ injuries - Donegal News

By Naomi Hamilton O'Donnell · Donegal News · 12 October 2026

The state of the footpaths in Ballybofey and Stranorlar has been branded a “disgrace” and an “absolute scandal”.

FOOTPATHS in the Twin Towns are being blamed for broken bones and other ‘serious’ injuries.

The subject arose at the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District meeting earlier today.

Cathaoirleach of the MD, councillor Patrick McGowan asked: “The footpaths in Ballybofey and Stranorlar, why are they not being fixed?

“This is a complete scandal, the amount of people who have fallen on the footpaths along McElhinneys, up the main street in Ballybofey and Stranorlar.

“It’s an absolute disgrace and it’s a poor reflection on the road staff of Donegal County Council that this is not done.”

The Fianna Fáil councillor added: “The amount of people that had serious injuries and had to be hospitalised. Elderly people falling, breaking bones, scraping their faces, everything.

“It’s an absolute scandal and it shouldn’t be happening. It’s going on and on. This has been raised now for years.

“Really, management should hang their heads in shame at the way pedestrians are treated. We need to find out if there is money sitting there available not being spent.

Separately, Cllr McGowan also raised concern over the condition of the car park at Ballybofey shopping centre.

“The shopping centre car park, that needs to be relined,” he said.

“If it needs to be resurfaced, something needs to be done immediately. The cars are parking every which way. The members have been raising it and raising it.

“It is terrible, you don’t know the way in or the way out now. People are just parking all over the place.”

He also called for more bus shelters and bus stops across the MD.

Area Engineer, Claire McGeever responded that the issues would be addressed in an upcoming workshop.
