UISCE ÉIREANN has welcomed a High Court decision upholding planning permission for the proposed Kilkee Wastewater Treatment Plant, along with a related judgment refusing leave to appeal the decision to the Court of Appeal.

The High Court dismissed a judicial review challenge to the project in July, and campaigners subsequently sought leave to appeal.

A spokesperson for Uisce Éireann said the project was “vital” to ending the long-standing discharge of raw sewage into Intrinsic Bay and providing modern wastewater infrastructure for the town.

They said Kilkee remains one of the few locations nationally where wastewater is discharged without treatment.

Uisce Éireann said the development would help protect water quality and the marine environment while supporting future residential, economic and tourism development.

The statement follows a call at the September meeting of the West Clare Municipal District for Uisce Éireann to hold a public information evening in Kilkee.

Cllr Gabriel Keating (FG) said he had received correspondence from residents and wanted to see whether “common ground” could be found.

Cllr Michael Shannon (FF), Cathaoirleach of the district, said the request would be sent on behalf of the district.

“We recognise that there are differing views in relation to the project, and we look forward to engaging openly, respectfully and constructively with local residents, community groups, elected representatives and other stakeholders to progress the project to the next stage,” the spokesperson said.

They said the project had been subject to detailed technical, environmental and planning assessments and had received the necessary approvals through the appropriate statutory processes.

According to its website, Uisce Éireann has received planning permission from An Bord Pleanála, now An Coimisiún Pleanála, for a new wastewater treatment plant, pumping station and pipework, with the next steps including the acquisition of land, wayleaves and rights of way.
