The celebration event marked a significant achievement for Glengad and set a strong foundation for its enduring fishing heritage.

“This facility has supported a strong fishing tradition in the community for generations and it is essential that we continue to invest in infrastructure like this to ensure that tradition can continue safely and sustainably into the future,” Speaking at the event, Timmy Dooley T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with responsibility for Fisheries. “Today’s opening is a testament to what can be achieved through partnership—between local authorities, Government, and the community itself. Together, we have invested over €1 million to bring these works to completion—an investment that will enhance safety and accessibility for all users who depend on this harbour.”

Charlie McConalogue T.D., Minister of State with responsibility for Sport and Postal Policy, who played a central role in the allocation of funding for the works during his time as Minister in the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, said that “the rejuvenation of Portaleen Pier is an investment in the future of Glengad, the wider Inishowen Peninsula and its fishing community. It is wonderful to see the local economy supported through modern infrastructure, ensuring safety and opportunity for generations to come.”

Donegal County Council provided co-funding for the project and was responsible for ensuring its successful delivery. John McLaughlin, Chief Executive, also commented on the successful completion of the project: “The re-opening of Portaleen Pier is the result of close collaboration between all stakeholders. It reflects our shared commitment to investing in community infrastructure that supports local businesses. I congratulate everyone involved and look forward to seeing the continued benefits this harbour will bring.”
