Pedestrian crossing planned for walkway in Leitrim town

Leitrim County Council will install a road crossing for pedestrians and cyclists along a new walkway in South Leitrim.

At last week’s meeting of Ballinamore Municipal District, Cllr Enda McGloin tabled a motion on the issue.

He asked that, “as part of any future smarter travel applications, to consider a road crossing for pedestrians and cyclists along the new ‘narrow gauge’ walkway, Drumshanbo on the Aughnasheelin Road, which connects the walk at the old Railway Bridge.”

Addressing the meeting, he stated that, “there is substantial use of this walkway.”

The council reply stated that, “an uncontrolled crossing point was deemed appropriate at this location. The crossing location is in a 50 km/hr speed zone with acceptable sight distances for approaching traffic.”

Cllr McGloin stated that “this particular proposal is very welcome” and it will “ensure that drivers are aware.”

The reply from the council also stated, “The council will install approach signage in advance of the crossing point to warn motorists about the upcoming pedestrian crossing.”

There is an existing controlled pedestrian crossing in close proximity at the church,” the reply added.

Cllr Brendan Barry (SF) welcomed the reply in relation to signage. “Hopefully, the signage will warn drivers. I wonder if people are watching signs,” he stated.
