Concerns over proposed cycle track in Laois to be raised at public meeting

A public meeting will be held next week on a proposed cycle track on the Laois border.

The proposed cycle track will connect Graigucullen to Carlow Town, starting at Barrowvale on the Laois side of Graiguecullen , past Aldi along Church Street and by the Croppy Graves and into Carlow Town park.

Construction on the 750 metre track is due to begin later this year.

News of the cycle track has sparked significant concerns from people in the area regarding the local need for such a track and the possible impact it may have on local businesses, particularly during its construction with reduced access, traffic congestion and the potential loss of car parking spaces.

Graiguecullen native and Laois Sinn Féin Cathaoirleach, Aaron Kelly, has flagged significant concerns with the proposed track and argued that it is not necessary.

He will host a public meeting on the cycle track alongside Carlow Councillor John Cassin on Tuesday, June 16.

The meeting will include an overview of the proposed track route and information on the public consultation process. It will also allow for people to discuss any concerns they may have as well as an opportunity to ask questions.

Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting which will take place at 8pm on Tuesday night at Graiguecullen GAA Clubhouse.

Sharing the news on social media, the Laois Sinn Féin Cathaoirleach said: “Whether you support the proposal, oppose it, or simply want more information, all are welcome to attend. The most important thing is that local residents have the information they need to make their voices heard through the official consultation process.”
