Minute’s silence held for Eddie Fullerton on 35th anniversary of his murder - Donegal News

A minute’s silence was held in County House Lifford today to mark the 35th anniversary of the murder of Donegal councillor Eddie Fullerton.

Sinn Féin Cllr Fullerton died on May 25, 1991, after he was shot by loyalist gunmen at his home in Buncrana.

The request for a minute’s silence in Fullerton’s memory came from Sinn Féin Cllr Jack Murray at the beginning of the May plenary meeting of Donegal County Council.

Cllr Murray said: “Eddie was a public representative, a community man, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a tireless voice for the people of Buncrana, Inishowen and Donegal.

“He stood up for working class communities, for Irish unity, for justice, equality and civil rights, at a time when doing so carried very real personal risk.

“For 35 years, Eddie’s family have carried a burden that no family should ever have to carry.

“They’ve grieved Eddie, but they’ve also had to fight year after year, decade after decade, for truth, for answers and for justice, and they’ve done so with extraordinary dignity, courage and determination.”

Cllr Murray credited the work of Cllr Fullerton’s family to uncovering collusion between British state agents and loyalist paramilitary groups during the Troubles.

“We know that the gang who murdered Eddie was made up of former British soldiers and serving soldiers too,” said Cllr Murray.

He said that Eddie Fullerton’s family feel “badly failed” by both the Irish government and the investigation into his murder.

Cllr Murray also expressed his honour to be sitting in a council seat once held by Cllr Fullerton.

“The greatest tribute that we can pay for Eddie is not only to remember him, but to continue the work he believed in, to stand with his family to demand truth and justice and to work for the peaceful, democratic achievement of the united Ireland that Eddie longed to see,” said Cllr Murray.

A man was arrested in 2021, however he was released without charge.
