There was huge sadness in West Donegal on Friday, as the local post office in Annagry closed its doors for the final time.

Postmistress Brid McCole officially retired today after years of dedicated service to the local community.

However, her retirement now leaves Annagry without a Post Office.

Despite a frantic search for a contractor to take over the business, and the matter being raised in the Dáil by Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty, the pleas to keep the critical service alive fell on deaf ears.

In a post on the Annagry Post Office account, McCole thanked the local community for all their support over the years.

"After many wonderful years, the time has come for me to retire, and with that, our Post Office will close its doors. I want to sincerely thank each and every one of you for your support, loyalty and friendship over the years.

McCole said that it has been an absolute privilege to serve this community.

"I’ll truly miss seeing all your familiar faces every day. Thank you for being such a special part of my journey."

Local Cllr Micheál Mac Giolla Easbuig, has said that An Post have said they are still willing to keep Annagry Post Office open if someone is willing to take over the business, even though the date has now passed.

However, despite a robust campaign to keep the lights on in Annagry Post Office a contractor couldn't be sought.

It's now highly unlikely at the 11th hour that someone will take the contract on.
