A CASTLEBAR man charged with the possession of over €360,000 worth of cannabis was released on bail after his father paid a €5,000 bail bond.

Mark Conaty with an address at 32 Riverdale Court, Castlebar was released on bail after his father paid a €5,000 bail bond at Castlebar District Court this afternoon.

Mr Conaty is charged with two counts of the possession of cannabis for sale and supply following the discovery of over €360,000 worth of cannabis in Castlebar on Monday and Tuesday of this week.

He first appeared before Castlebar District Court on Wednesday where he was remanded in custody but a bail application came before Judge Vincent Deane this morning.

Mr Thomas Walsh, solicitor for Mr Conaty told the court that bail conditions had been agreed with the State which included an independent surety of €5,000 in cash to be lodged with the court.

Denis Conaty, the father of the defendant told Judge Deane that he was providing the €5,000 and understood that the money will be forfeited if the defendant fails to turn up in court.

Judge Deane approved the independent surety and remanded Mr Conaty on bail to appear before Castlebar District Court on July 1 for DPP directions.

Gardaí discovered 18kg of cannabis which has a potential value of around €360,000 in a property in Rush Street, Castlebar on Monday, May 18 and the following day, they discovered cannabis with a street value of €4,400 in a follow up search of a separate property on Rush Street.

Mr Conaty was arrested in connection to the discovery of the drugs and was subsequently charged with two counts of possession for sale and supply and two counts of possession of cannabis.
