A one-way system has been sought for a road which is situated near a well-known County Kildare hotel.

The call was made by Labour Party councillor Mark Leigh at the latest Athy Municipal District meeting, which took place on Monday, June 15.

During the early stages of the meeting, Cllr Leigh motioned for Kildare County Council (KCC) to consider ‘making the L40071 at Court Road, Gallow Hill a one-way system past the Clanard Court Hotel’.

His motion was seconded by his party colleague, Cllr Aoife Breslin.

“I myself have seen a number of [serious] incidents occur on this road,” he added.

Cllr Leigh also suggested to KCC if it could implement some interim safety measures, such as the installation of traffic calming measures, the installation of new signage and / or a temporary ban on Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs).

Cllr Breslin then spoke and told KCC that she wished to support Cllr Leigh’s motion, and described the road as being a ‘very narrow’ one that is frequently accessed by children and families.

In response to the motion, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: “KCC will consider the introduction of a one-way system in the context of other changes to the road network in and around Athy to restrict HGV access.”

Moreover, a representative of KCC who was also present at the meeting asserted to Cllr Leigh that they would be happy to meet with him on site in order to explore the matter further with him.
