Here at Ocean FM we’re putting road safety firmly in the spotlight with 6 road safety shows which will run on the final Sunday of each month between September and February.
Our opening show has a particular focus on one of the most frightening and dangerous incidents a motorist can encounter — wrong-way driving on motorways and dual carriageways.
For anyone travelling at motorway speeds, encountering a vehicle coming towards you in the wrong direction can have devastating consequences. So, what can be done to prevent these incidents, improve road design, strengthen roads policing, and tackle the behaviour that puts so many innocent road users at risk?
We have a strong panel of guests joining us to examine the issue from a number of different perspectives.
Listen to contributions from Sligo Councillor Thomas Walsh, who will discuss the responsibility of social media companies and whether more needs to be done to prevent dangerous driving videos and other harmful road-related material from being promoted or circulated on their platforms.
We’ll also hear from GRA representative James Morris Rowe on roads policing — including enforcement, resources and the challenges facing Gardaí in dealing with dangerous driving.
Junior Minister Canney will join us to talk about the construction and design of safer motorways and what measures can be introduced to reduce the risk of serious collisions.
We’ll also hear from former Garda Chrisy Galligan, who will discuss the issue of young people engaging in joyriding and the use of stolen cars, including his views on the need for additional detention and rehabilitation facilities for young offenders.
And Leitrim Councillor Eddie Mitchell will look at road safety around schools — an issue that affects children, parents, teachers and communities every single day.
