School transport worries raised again in Letterkenny - Donegal News

SCHOOL transport worries in Letterkenny have fuelled calls for Bus Éireann to take action.
This follows claims of school children experiencing difficulty accessing bus services in different areas of the town.
Concerns were raised today for the safety of students availing of bus transport in the Cullion Road area.
A motion on the issue was raised by Cllr Donal Coyle at today’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District (MD).
He asked: “That this Council write to Bus Éireann regarding the provision of transport for children from the Cullion Road who are attending second level schools in Letterkenny.”
“The children that live on Cullion Road do have transport provided but it’s not on Cullion Road,” said the Fianna Fáil councillor.
“They access the transport at the junction of Cullion Road at the N13. I think two of the children are living quite near to the junction. The rest are living a few kilometres further down the road.
“It’s not a road for walking on, therefore their parents have to bring their children to the top of the road so that they can access the bus. In the evening when they’re coming back, the children are dropped off at Lurgybrack school, and that’s from a safety point of view.
“They were being dropped off opposite where they were being picked up, but it was too dangerous.”
The motion was seconded by his party colleague, Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly, who said it was a “no-brainer”.
A request then came from Cllr Jimmy Kavanagh to combine the motion with a similar one that he brought to the previous MD meeting.
He had asked the council to write to Bus Éireann requesting an additional school transport route from the Glebe area to Woodlands NS.
The Fine Gael councillor said he had been contacted by parents who raised concerns over the pick-up and drop-off points on the current route.
Additionally, Fianna Fáil councillor Ciaran Brogan also called for a meeting with Bus Éireann to discuss the traffic situation in Letterkenny.
The two motions were taken together and the council agreed to include the issues in a letter to Bus Éireann.
