Fresh calls have been made to place a speed van and Gardaí on a local road in Ballybofey which is being used by some motorists to ‘bypass’ the Twin Towns.

The matter was raised by Independent Councillor Martin Scanlon at this week’s meeting of the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District (MD).

Cllr Scanlon said the Cappry road, which links the Donegal Road at the Roadhouse bar to Glenfin Road, has become even busier since roadworks started last month on Donegal Street.

“We still need a speed van at Cappry because that road is being used even more as a bypass since the roadworks started in Ballybofey,” he said

“That GoSafe van has been sitting at the same place for the last 15 years and everyone knows it’s there.”

Cllr Scanlon argued that the van should be relocated to Cappry while the works are ongoing on Ballybofey and Stranorlar Main Street.

In response, the council’s Senior Roads Engineer, Clare McGeever, said she had no problem raising speeding issues during her regular meetings with Gardaí.

“These issues were raised with Gardaí before in relation to GoSafe van locations and we will look at them again and see where it’s possible for the van to safely park,” she said.
