Muckalee showcases community spirit as Pride of Place judges visit

Representatives from local community groups, alongside elected councillors, guided the judging panel on a tour of the community café and shop, GAA Club, the local crèche and St Brendan’s National School.

The village was nominated by Kilkenny County Council in the Inclusive Communities category.

Senior Executive Officer with the council’s Community Department, Ann Marie Shortall, said “the competition recognises communities across the island of Ireland that demonstrate outstanding volunteerism and local initiative.”

She also said “Muckalee stood out because of its welcoming approach and the way projects are delivered by and for the entire community. She also highlighted the community café as an example of what can be achieved through local fundraising, grant support and the dedication of volunteers.”

Kilkenny County Council has also nominated Graiguenamanagh, Slieverue and Kilkenny’s Age Friendly City and County initiative in this year’s competition. Winners will be announced at the national Pride of Place awards ceremony in October.
