The Moresby was shipwrecked off the coast of Dungarvan on Christmas Eve and claimed 20 lives, including a two-year-old girl

The Moresby tragedy occurred off the coast of Dungarvan in 1895.

Caroline Spencer Councillors in Dungarvan have passed a unanimous motion to officially commemorate The Moresby tragedy of 1895.

The Moresby was shipwrecked off the coast of Dungarvan on Christmas Eve that year and claimed 20 lives, including a two-year-old girl.

Cllr Donnchadh Mulcahy (Sinn Féin) put forward the motion at a recent council meeting. He requested that Waterford City and County Council explore the "appropriate solution to install a permanent marker to commemorate the loss of life on The Moresby, which sank on Christmas Eve 1895."

He continued: "It's an important part of Dungarvan maritime history and hopefully it will never be forgotten that The Moresby was a tragic event that claimed many lives, but also highlight the incredible bravery of those who risked their lives to save others on the day."
