A man who assaulted the owner of a pub in Castlerea has been jailed for three months following an appearance before Ballaghaderreen District Court.

Dillon McDonagh (27), of Collins Court, Ballymoe appeared before Judge Vincent Deane charged with three counts of assault causing harm and one count of criminal damage.

The court heard how on June 6th, 2024, at a bar on Main Street, Castlerea, McDonagh was refused entry and became aggressive.

Sergeant Mark Mahon, prosecuting, outlined how McDonagh followed the proprietor into the bar, “grabbed him and threw him into an internal door, breaking a pane of glass”.

The victim went behind the bar and closed the same door, he said, before crouching down behind the bar. McDonagh then punched the man through the broken glass, injuring himself in the process.

McDonagh sustained a serious puncture to his bicep and was transported by ambulance to hospital, the court heard.

Judge Deane noted that McDonagh had a number of previous convictions, including a suspended sentence, and jailed him for three months for the assault.
