Kilkenny County Council has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, of a significant capital allocation to support Housing Adaptation Grants for Older People and People with Disabilities in private homes across the county for 2026.

The Department has confirmed an Exchequer allocation of €2,846,893 for Kilkenny this year and when combined with a minimum of €502,393 in matched funding from the Council’s own resources, the total estimated investment available to households in the county will be €3,349,286.

The funding package will enable the Council to continue supporting essential home adaptation works that allow older people and those with disabilities to live safely and independently in their own homes.

Ian Gardner, A/Director of Services, said: “This investment represents a strong commitment to supporting some of the most vulnerable people in our community.”

“Housing Adaptation Grants play a crucial role in enabling residents to remain in their homes with dignity, comfort and safety. We welcome the increased national funding and the continued partnership with the Department to deliver these vital supports,” he added.

The Council said it will prioritise application based on medical need, ensuring that essential works, such as bathroom modifications, accessibility improvements and mobility supports, are delivered as efficiently as possible.

A portion of the allocation will be reserved for emergency cases to ensure Kilkenny County Council can respond quickly where urgent adaptations are required.

The Council concluded by saying that it looks forward to utilising this funding to deliver real and meaningful benefits to households across the county throughout 2026.
