After being closed for almost two decades, Longford town's newly-refurbished Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) at MacEoin Park has been officially reopened.

The reopening, which took place today, Thursday, April 30, is the result of a significant upgrade. The impressive facility has been transformed into a modern recreational space featuring a new soccer pitch and handball wall with a total investment of €182,096 from the Community Recognition Fund, along with additional support from Longford County Council .

The restored area will now be a key amenity for people of all ages.

The official reopening was carried out by Dara Calleary, Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, who was joined by local councillors, council officials, community representatives and families from across the town. Speaking at the event, Minister Calleary said he was delighted to mark the reopening of a facility that has been transformed into a vibrant and inclusive space.

“With over €182,000 in funding from my Department under the Community Recognition Fund, this project has created a place where people can gather, play and connect in a safe environment." The minister added that the fund, introduced in 2023, recognises the efforts of communities in welcoming and supporting new arrivals to Ireland. Leas Cathaoirleach of Longford Municipal District, Cllr Kevin Hussey , described the reopening as a proud moment for the town.

“This facility has been closed for almost twenty years, and its return shows what can be achieved when we listen to local communities and respond to their needs."

Chief Executive of Longford County Council, Paddy Mahon, said the project highlights the impact of targeted investment at local level.

“The redevelopment of MacEoin Park has transformed a long-closed space into a vibrant community facility." Mr Mahon added, "Projects like this improve quality of life, encourage participation in sport and strengthen community wellbeing.”

The reopening event featured family-friendly activities and refreshments, reflecting the strong community interest in the return of the facility.
