The prominent building is getting a facelift

Darragh Murphy The prominent and recognisable façade of Shaws on Waterford’s quays might be getting replaced.

The existing façade which is proposed to be replaced dates from the 1960s.

Due to deterioration and spalling, it requires a complete replacement.

Proposed plans Proposed under plans submitted by the retailer is the replacement of the 1960s era plastered shopfront with a brand new redesigned shopfront of increased height.

It is proposed to incorporate a commissioned art installation panel above the front entrance.

The new façade aims to be a prominent ‘arrival’ building on the approach to the city while crossing the new pedestrian Bridge.

Planning reports state: 'The need to replace the 1960’s façade has presented Shaws with an opportunity to review the façade and streetscape appearance of their significant building on Meagher Quay.

'This will become more prominent once the new pedestrian bridge approach to the city from the North Quay is completed and the upgrade of the enhanced pedestrianisation of the public realm of Meagher Quay is completed.'

The 1840’s historic section of the Shaws shopfront will remain in place and be protected during the works.

A decision from Waterford Council’s planning department on the proposed plans is expected.
