Líofacht sa Ghaeilge ina "chosaint ón mbás" ag roinnt ar The Traitors
By Concubhar Ó Liatháin · The Journal · 2 September 2025
Bhí an Ghaeilge ina gné lárnach sa dara eagrán de ‘The Traitors’ ach dibríodh duine de bheirt a labhrann Gaeilge ag deireadh an chláir.

AN GHAEILGE AR ar ‘Traitor’ ná fealltóir nó is féidir úsáid a bhaint freisin as ‘tréatúir’. Beidh ar na rannpháirtithe agus lucht leanúna Na Fealltóirí/The Traitors (RTÉ 1) snás a chuir orthu seo agus pé focail eile Gaeilge atá acu, is léir, tar éis go raibh páirt chomh lárnach ag an teanga sa dara eagrán den tsraith atáimíd faoi gheasa a craoladh aréir agus atá go leor againn faoi gheasa aige.
An tasc a thug a laithreoir, Siobhán McSweeney, aisteoir le ceangal laidir le Cúil Aodha i nGaeltacht Mhúscraí agus a thuill cáil mar gheall ar a ról mar Sister Michael i Derry Girls, dos na rannpháirtithe ná go mbeadh orthu dul ar thoraíocht taisce tríd an choill gar do Chaisleán Shláine, ceanncheathrú an chluiche, agus roinnt dioscaí adhmaid le siombail orthu a aimsiú.
I lár na coille bhí roinnt galláin adhmaid le scríbhneoireacht orthu i scribhinn Ogham agus dá ndéanfaidís na dioscaí cearta leis na siombail cearta a leagadh ag bun na túir cearta, bhuafadh siad an duais, sa chás seo €5,000 chun cur leis an gciste a bheidh le buachan ag buaiteoir nó buaiteoirí an chluiche nuair a bheidh deireadh ráite.
I measc iad san ațá páirteach sa chluiche tá Niall, bunmhúinteoir ó Chontae Thír Eoghain i dTuaisceart Éireann. Agus is sisean is Diane, craoltóir ráidió le Gaeilge ó dhúchas ó Oileáin Árainn, a chabhraigh lenár gcáirde na freagraí cearta a aimsiú taobh istigh den leath uair a chloig a thug Siobhán dóibh.
Bhí an méid seo le rá ag Niall le linn an chláir oíche Dé Luain:
Ná dearúd Nina ach an oiread. Tá geansaí á chaitheamh aici le ‘ Cúla Búla’ scríte air – sean nath cainte é sin a cheanglaim le daoine ó Bhaile Átha Cliath a d’fhreastail ar choláistí samhraidh sa Ghaeltacht roinnt blian ó shin.
Ach Diane bocht, cé go raibh Gaeilge aici, níorbh aon chosaint di siúd a líofacht sa chéad teanga oifigiúil. In ainneoin go raibh sí dílis – fuair sí bata agus bóthar mar gheall ar sheiftiúlacht na bhfealltóirí.
Bhí an chainteoir dúchais sásta, gan amhras, go raibh Gaeilge in úsáid ar an gclár.
In agallamh le na meáin, The Journal s an áireamh , agus tar éis a díbeartha, dúirt Diane go raibh sé go h-iontach gur baineadh úsáid as go leor Gaeilge le linn an chláir agus gur chuala sí go leor canúintí á n-úsáid.Dúirt sí go raibh cumais éagsúla i labhairt na Gaeilge ag na h-imreoirí ach gur bhain gach éinne úsáid as an ‘cúpla focal’ a raibh acu.
Ar ndóigh tá Siobhán í féin ag baint úsáide as an nGaeilge ó am go chéile le linn an chláir. An chéad oíche chomhairligh sí dos na rannpháirtithe ‘bí curamach’ agus iad ag iarraidh na baraillí a thabhairt ar ais go dtí an Chaisleán.
Agus tá an fhoireann léirithe sásta leis an méid atá tarluithe go dtí seo. Dar le Mairéad Whelan, stiurthóir an chomhlacht léirithe Kite agus léiritheoir sráithe The Traitors Ireland, is fiú go mór nuair atá formaidí móra idirnáisiúnta á gcur in oiriúint don tír seo iad a bheith chomh Éireannach agus is féidir.

“Sa tasc inné, d’fhéadfadh aon imreoir le cúpla focal tabhairt faoi le fonn – ach ghlac na Gaeilgeoirí ceannas agus d’éirigh leo.”
Dúirt sí ná raibh aon dealramh a bheith buartha faoin gcontúirt go dtabharfaí báta agus bóthar do chainteoir Gaeilge go luath sa sraith. “Is é an fhírinne ná go bhfuil ar na léiritheoirí dul i dtaithí ar an gcoincheap nach bhfuil aon smacht acu ar cad atá chun titim anois nó ag aon pointe eile sa chluiche,” dúirt sí.
Agus sa dara eagrán bhí sí ag iarraidh ar na rannpháirtithe ‘brostaigí, brostaigí’. Tháinig an dachas muinteoireachta atá ag gaolta Shiobhán tríd sa mhéid sin nó d’fheadfá í a shamhlú i mbun ranga ar bhunscoil.
Béimíd ag faire go cúramach le h-aghaidh a thuilleadh Gaeilge ar ‘The Traitors’ sna h-eagráin atá le craoladh.
