Coolock older persons' housing scheme wins major architecture award

Dublin City Council has won the RIAI Architecture Award 2026 in the Living Housing catagory for their older persons’ housing scheme at Glin Court in Coolock

Dublin City Council has won the RIAI Architecture Award 2026 for an older person’s housing scheme.

This award recognises excellence in architectural design, innovation, and the delivery of high-quality built environments. DCC took home the prize in the Living Housing Award category for its new older persons’ housing scheme at Glin Court , Coolock, Dublin 17.

Working in partnership with the Department of Housing, Paul Keogh Architects, and Purcell Construction Ltd, DCC stated the success of this project was characterised by “a strong collaborative approach”. They said all stakeholders helped ensure the delivery of homes that are “not only well designed, but also durable, energy-efficient, and capable of meeting residents’ needs into the future”.

The development saw the replacement of the previous housing complex with 32 new, quality homes for older persons, designed to support independent living. Located within an established area, DCC said the “development makes a meaningful contribution to addressing the housing need in Dublin city, particularly for older persons”.

Lord Mayor Ray McAdam said the RIAI Award “demonstrates what can be achieved through strong collaboration and a shared commitment to quality, sustainability and innovation”. “Glin Court provides modern, accessible homes that support independent living for older people, while also fostering a strong sense of community,” he said.

“It is a fantastic example of how we can deliver housing that meets real needs and enhances quality of life. I warmly congratulate everyone involved in bringing this exceptional development to fruition.”

The development sees a landscaped residential garden for use by all the residents and also includes a modern community kitchen to serve new residents and the wider community alike, with a meals-on-wheels service. Delivered in accordance with the National Disability Authority’s recommendations of an A2 energy rating throughout, DCC said this demonstrates their commitment to ensuring “sustainable communities”.

Chair of the Housing SPC Cllr Deirdre Heney said the award for Glin Court highlights the work the council have been doing to support independent living for older people. “This is a very positive addition to the Coolock community,” she added.
