A Letterkenny man with multiple previous convictions has escaped a prison term after causing €600 worth of damage when he launched a large stone at a car parked at the town’s Retail Park.

Dilaver Elahi (32), Meadowbank, Letterkenny, appeared before Letterkenny District Court after CCTV footage captured him hurling a large stone onto the bonnet and window of a vehicle on May 28, 2022. The damage was caused to a car belonging to another person who had been parked at the busy retail complex at the time.

Judge Emile Daly had initially indicated she wished to deal with the matter through community service, but was told that was not an option due to Elahi’s physical condition.

His solicitor, Mr Patsy Gallagher, informed the court that his client had suffered a fall and required pins to repair a leg injury, making him unfit to carry out such an order. A compensation order was also ruled out, with the court hearing Elahi has no financial means.

Mr Gallagher told the court that many of Elahi’s previous offences were rooted in a severe addiction, though he said his client has since received help in that regard. Elahi had previously served seven weeks in prison in 2024.

Taking his extensive record into account, Judge Daly imposed a two-month custodial sentence but suspended it in full for a period of 12 months, on condition that Elahi stay out of trouble and comply with all directions from medical professionals.
