A DONEGAL councillor has condemned graffiti at a local beach as “brainless” and “scandalous, mindless vandalism”.
The graffiti appeared outside the toilets at Warden Beach in Fanad today.
Taking to social media, Milford-based councillor Declan Meehan said: “Scandalous, mindless vandalism at Warden Beach in Fanad. There is no place in our community for this wanton defacement of community facilities, and brainless offensive ‘messaging’.
“Thank you to the workers for addressing this and getting it tidied up. If anyone has any information on the culprits responsible, please get in contact with the gardaí.”
The Independent councillor told the Donegal News that he has never come across such graffiti in his time as a public representative.
“It just seems to be coming from a place of Islamophobia and trying to kind of stir up something in the local community, which is bizarre and very disappointing,” he said.
“We would have seen anti-Ukrainian graffiti around the time of the beginning of the war in 2022. The Zs that were spray-painted on places around Letterkenny and around this area as well. But I’ve never seen something on this scale.”
Cllr Meehan confirmed that the incident has been reported to gardaí and Donegal County Council.
“I think that it has been covered over today. I haven’t got confirmation of that, but I hope that it is at this stage,” he said. “You don’t want that to be sitting around for people to see.”
He added: “It’s a bad reflection on the area and it’s not a reflection of the people living in the community at all.
“It’s a signature point on the Wild Atlantic Way. So even with the content aside, the fact that anyone would deface a building and a public amenity to that level is just completely brainless and mindless, and not considerate of the local community at all.
“It’s so unusual and it’s not something that we would ever want to see repeated in this area or anywhere else in the county.”
Ballymastocker Bay/ Warden Beach features a stunning golden sand beach which runs along the Fanad Peninsula.
