Artificial intelligence is being used to identify worn road markings across Louth .

Louth County Council confirmed the new tool monitors and alerts the local authority to the worst cases across the county.

It came at the March meeting of the Dundalk Municipal District in which Green Party councillor Marianne Butler questioned what the council's protocol is for repairing road markings in Louth.

"Is it a case that we mark our roads every five or six years, or is it I have to put in a query saying the road markings have gone very faded here can you go and refresh them.

"Or is there a protocol or standard that the roads will be marked 'x' number of years," she said.

A spokesperson for Louth County Council confirmed that it aims to complete all roads every five to six years, but tries to "eliminate the worst ones" each year.

Sinn Féín councillor Antóin Watters also questioned if Louth County Council has received its 2026 allocation for road markings.

Cllr Watters acknowledged that there has been a lot of work carried out across areas in North Louth, but said councillors would "love to see it all done".

Louth County Council said the planned €60,000 for road markings has not yet been confirmed by the Department of Transport.

However, it said it is using emergency funding to get "the worst roads resurfaced".
