A school in West Donegal has expressed their relief and joy at having speeding signs erected outside their school during drop-off and pick-up
A school in West Donegal has expressed their delight that speed signs will now be in operation during school drop-off and pick-up times.
Scoil Bhríde is located in Lettermacaward, but was initially left out of a speed safety proposal that the village was campaigning for.
Lettermacaward Development Association held a protest at the beginning of September in an effort to tackle what they described as "excessive speeding" through the village.
Scoil Bhríde was initially excluded from a speed safety proposal in May, but councillor Brian Carr has announced that the decision has now been reversed.
"Good news for Scoil Bhríde in Lettermacaward. I'm delighted to see, at our latest Speed Limit Review meeting, that the school will now have periodic 30km/h speed signs in place during school drop-off and pick-up times.
"At our first review meeting in May, I noticed that Scoil Bhríde had been left out of the proposal. I spoke with Principal Ciarán and the Development Group and invited them to attend the public consultation event in Dungloe to make their case. They turned up in great numbers, presented a strong case, and thankfully, their efforts paid off," said Carr.
Carr said the decision is a huge victory for schoolchildren in the area, and the community as a whole.
However, he highlighted it's just the first steps of many needed to make Lettermacaward safer.
"It’s fantastic to see the decision reversed and Scoil Bhríde will now be included. A great result for the children, the school and the entire community. First of many steps needed to make the village safer and reducing speed," said Carr.
