QUESTIONS have been raised about the cleaning of Ennis town centre following the completion of extensive public realm works across the town earlier this year.
The town centre is set to receive four deep cleans each year, with a councillor questioning whether that will be enough to maintain the newly upgraded public realm.
The number of cleans provided for under a contract secured by the Ennis Municipal District was confirmed at this month’s meeting following a question from Cllr Clare Colleran Molloy (FF).
In her question, Cllr Colleran Molloy welcomed the standard of cleaning carried out in the town in late July and asked whether there was a regular schedule for deep cleaning going forward to ensure the ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the town centre.
Tom Mellett, Senior Executive Engineer, said the Ennis MD had procured a deep-clean contract covering the streets included in the Public Realm project.
He said this would complement the ongoing maintenance carried out by the Ennis MD cleansing team, adding that the timing of the deep cleans would also take account of factors including weather conditions and large events such as GAA matches.
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Colleran Molloy said it was “disheartening” to see the state of the town during the summer after the efforts made through the public realm works.
She noted that while the council had a contracted team in place, she had sought clarity on how often the deep cleaning would take place.
Mr Mellett confirmed that the contract provides for four deep cleans per year, with the schedule to be determined according to requirements and alongside the work carried out by the council’s own crews.
Cllr Colleran Molloy asked how the figure of four cleans had been determined and whether it was based on cost.
She said she would have considered a deep clean every two months to be more appropriate.
Mr Mellett said the number of cleans was partly based on available resources and the specific cleaning method recommended by the project architect.
He added that the arrangement would be kept under review, with additional cleaning possible if required throughout the year.
Mr Mellett also said the recently improved public realm would require increased resources and budget to maintain the standards achieved.
