Safety improvements to be made to Laois junction

A junction on a Laois road connecting two villages will see safety improvement works soon following concerns from local residents.

Councillor Conor Bergin requested Laois County Council to install new road traffic markings and a stop sign at Marymount junction in Camross on behalf of the local community.

Speaking at the July meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick MD, the Fine Gael councillor said he has raised this issue before with the council regarding the junction which is on the road between Ballaghmore and Camross.

“It’s quite a busy junction. You have the crèche and the new Gaelscoil Shlí Dála in Ballaghmore an then a very busy and growing school in Camross with a crèche there too. There’s huge traffic on that road on a daily basis,” Cllr Bergin told the council.

“We need clear road markings and signage which are essential for road safety. The existing markings that are there are faded and also the stop sign could be looked at again as there is quite a high volume of traffic and they go at a fairly heavy speed on the road.”

Cllr Bergin reiterated that local residents have called for these works which he said would not be “a very expensive job.”

Laois County Council agreed that the road will be included in the 2026 lining works programme. All works will be dependent on available budgets and resources.
