PATHWAYS on Athlunkard Bridge are to be raised with Limerick City and County Council following concerns about their condition.

The issue was raised by Cllr James Ryan (SF) at the September meeting of the Shannon Municipal District.

In a written Notice of Motion, Cllr Ryan called for the Shannon MD to work with Limerick City and County Council to have the pathways on the bridge repaired and resurfaced.

He said the paths were in “urgent need of upgrades and re-surfacing” and questioned whether the Clare side of the bridge was also the responsibility of Limerick City and County Council.

In a written response, A/Senior Executive Engineer with Shannon Municipal District, Caimin Dillon, said the council would engage directly with Limerick City and County Council.

“Shannon Municipal District will write to and engage directly with the Roads Department in Limerick City and County Council on this matter,” he said.

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Ryan said he was unsure whether the bridge was under the responsibility of Limerick City and County Council.

He raised concerns about the pathway alongside the wall, saying part of the wall had come away and had not been repaired.

Cllr Michael Begley (IND), Cathaoirleach of the Shannon Municipal District, seconded the motion and questioned whether Clare County Council could be expected to contribute 50% of the cost if works were required.

It was confirmed during the discussion that the bridge is the responsibility of Limerick City and County Council.

Executive Engineer John Strand, who was deputising for Mr Dillon at the meeting, said councillors could raise the concern with Limerick City and County Council through an online portal.
