Return of Finglas bus service 'important victory for community campaigning'

The Finglas Bus Action Group has achieved one of its key demand as bus service will return to Beneavin Road, the loss of which left elderly residents without any local link to three nursing homes

The return of bus services to Beneavin Road has been claimed as an “important victory for community campaigning in Finglas”.

People Before Profit Councillor Conor Reddy welcomed news that the 24 bus will begin serving Beneavin Road from August 23. The return of the services to Beneavin Road was a central demand of the Finglas Bus Action Group since they were formed last winter.

This non-partisan community campaign began as a result of a public meeting called by Cllr Reddy in the Shamrock Lodge in Finglas in November 2025 . Residents came together in response to widespread concerns about the impact that the BusConnects changes were having on people across Finglas.

The introduction of the changes brought an end to Route 9. This had serviced residents at Beneavin Road to three nursing homes as well as a local school. Cllr Reddy previously spoke about how the loss of service only further isolated the area’s most elderly and vulnerable members.

Now that it has been confirmed the service will be restored, Cllr Reddy said it stands as an “important victory for the people who organised, petitioned, protested and refused to allow their community to be left behind”. “These changes have come about because residents came together as the Finglas Bus Action Group to defend and improve public transport in our community,” he said.

“The group set out a number of clear demands. These included restoring a bus to Beneavin Road, ensuring that a service from Finglas East reached the north side of the city centre, improving reliability across the new Finglas routes, restoring a link to Mobhi Road, and providing a local connection between Finglas West and Finglas South.

“We have now made progress on three of these demands. The 23 and 24 were rerouted along the quays, providing the connection from Finglas East that residents had campaigned for, and we now have confirmation that a service will return to Beneavin Road."

Cllr Reddy also said that he received assurances at a recent National Transport Authority (NTA) briefing for public representatives that additional drivers would be assigned to the F-Spine routes from the autumn.

“I hope the additional drivers will result in a significant improvement in reliability, but residents have heard promises before. I will continue to monitor the service and keep the pressure on until people in Finglas have the reliable and accessible public transport they deserve,” he said.

“This victory is a testament to the power we have as a community when we stand together. It is also a blueprint for how we can win the other services, facilities and investment that Finglas badly needs."
