New swimming shelter sought for Rathmullan Beach - Donegal News

A NEW swimming shelter is being sought for Rathmullan Beach.

The call came from Cathaoirleach of Letterkenny-Milford MD, Cllr Pauric McGarvey, at the June meeting.

“Will this council seek opportunities to fund and install a new swimming shelter in Rathmullan beach to accommodate the open water swimmers who use Rathmullan for swimming all year round?,” he asked.

The Independent councillor outlined that open water swimming has become “extremely popular”, with swimmers taking to the sea at Rathmullan throughout the year.

He explained that a new swim shelter closer to the beach would help swimmers who wish to dry off and keep their belongings safe.

In the official response, Cllr McGarvey was informed: “Swim shelters are provided by Donegal Sports Partnership (DSP) through Sport Ireland’s Swimming Infrastructure Fund.

“Normal procedure is for swimming groups to contact DSP directly and express an interest in acquiring a shelter, and they will be provided with an application form to fill in. Provision of shelters is subject to funding availability, meaning a limited number are provided each year.

“The Council’s Coastal team can provide assistance, where necessary, at installation stage.”
