Listen Back: Monaghan ’place of sanctuary’ those fleeing conflict. Monaghan Town has become a place of peace and sanctuary for people right

Tallon O'Farrell and his wife Roxy moved from America to Monaghan one year ago after feeling that it was no longer safe in their own country; and wanted to secure a safer and better future for their son.

Since moving to Monaghan, Tallon said this is the first time in his life that he has never had to look over his shoulder due to his beliefs; and being from the South East of America.

His wife Roxy said the multicultural community in Monaghan has been a blessing for them; adding that being a true American is about accepting numerous cultures, however this was something that they were unable to practice in their home country, prior to making the move to Ireland.

Indeed, over 12% of people living in Monaghan Town are from other countries outside of Ireland.

To celebrate the many cultures within the town, a cultural showcase was held in St Patrick's Hall. Countries represented on the day included Lithuania, Ireland, Uganda, Ukraine, Thailand, Vietnam Latvia and Nigeria.

The aim of the event was to create a better world through service, friendship and understanding.

Groups like the Monaghan ICA and the Monaghan Rotary and Lions clubs have played an instrumental role when it comes to bringing people together from various communities and building friendships.
