Motorists have been warned against leaving valuables on show in their cars amid an increase in break-ins in Dundalk .

Sinn Féin councillor for Dundalk-Carlingford Antóin Watters said there had been a "spate of break-ins of vehicles in some public amenities" over the last number of weeks.

Cllr Watters' comments were made at the April meeting of the Dundalk Municipal District.

The Sinn Féin councillor said people are leaving valuables where they can be seen which has led to cars being broken into and questioned if Louth County Council could install signage to warn motorists.

"I’m wondering if we can roll out an awareness campaign or new signage saying ‘Please note: Thieves operating in this area' and raise awareness of that," he said.

A spokesperson for Louth County Council told the councillors, the local authority would examine the possibility of new signage to warn motorists.
