In a massive turn of events for Newbridge, €20 million in funding has been announced for its proposed new bridge, which has been long sought after by locals.

The announcement was made the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD (Fianna Fáil), who has granted the €20m to Kildare County Council (KCC).

The new funds will allow KCC to to pay for 795 metres in road length and the new bridge over the River Liffey, which would in turn complete the Newbridge Southern Outer Orbital Road.

The latest update has been welcomed by Minister Browne’s party colleague and Newbridge-based politician, Senator Fiona O’Loughlin.

Fianna Fáil Senator Fiona O'Loughlin | FILE PHOTO She added that the Department of Transport is currently reviewing the tender documents, which will allow it to appoint an engineering consultant who will put together the detailed design and construction tender documents.

According to Senator O’Loughlin, the Department will also monitor and supervise the construction of the new bridge.

She concluded by asserting: “I have been engaging extensively with both Minister Brown and Minister [for Transport of Ireland] Daragh O’Brien to get to this point, and I am looking forward to seeing shovels in the ground soon.”
