PICTURES: French delegation welcomed to Longford for twinning milestone

25 years of friendship and cultural exchanges between Ballymahon and the town of Landévant in Brittany were honoured during a visit by the French delegation.

As part of the visit, Mayor Pascal Le Calvé of Landévant was presented with a special piece of bog oak at Áras an Chontae by Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council Cllr Garry Murtagh, Deputy Chief Executive John Brannigan and Director of Services Samantha Healy.

The presentation was made in recognition of the special lasting relationship between south Longford and north Brittany.

During their stay, the French delegation experienced some of Longford's best-known attractions and hospitality including a visit to the Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre which gave the French guests an opportunity to explore the remarkable Iron Age roadway and learn more about the county's rich heritage.

A special tree-planting ceremony was also held in Ballymahon to commemorate 25 years of close ties between the two communities.

The delegation later visited Mercy Secondary School, where they had an opportunity to meet students and staff after which the group went on to enjoy a guided tour of St Mel's Cathedral before attending an evening of entertainment at Ballymahon Library.

The anniversary celebrations highlighted the importance of international partnerships and the strong bonds that have developed between Ballymahon and Landévant since the twinning arrangement was first established.
