Motorists express joy at having Ferrymountgarret Bridge reopen on Kilkenny / Wexford border

By Martin Quilty · KCLR · 28 August 2026

The route reopened a day earlier than anticipated

A major restoration project’s been underway on the Ferrymountgarrett Bridge, which included repairs to the steel deck and concrete spans while the historic structure was also sandblasted and repainted.

Project manager Martin Fitzgerald says the complex works were completed a day ahead of schedule ( as we reported yesterday ), allowing traffic to return across the bridge.

For the next month a traffic management system will be in place to allow for the safe completion of concrete and parapet repairs on the bridge, as well as the installation of public lighting.
