One of busiest Leitrim roads needs work urgently before a ‘serious crash happens'

Photo: Google Maps Issues regarding the R202 in south Leitrim were raised at the recent meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District Urgent work needs to be carried out on a busy Leitrim road to alleviate flooding before a serious accident occurs, a recent local authority meeting heard.

Cllr Sean McGowan (FF) tabled a motion in relation to flooding on the R202.

"I ask the District Engineer to carry out investigations as to why there is flooding on the R202 between Gort Cut and the turn known locally as McCauley’s turn after periods of heavy rainfall. “This is one of the busiest roads within County Leitrim and something needs to be done urgently to address this issue before a serious crash happens there. Does the road need to be raised at that particular location, it appears to have sunk, are blocked roadside drains causing the flooding?" the motion stated.

Speaking at the meeting, District Engineer Emma Donohue said that she was “aware of the issues and the council have been speaking to landowners.”

A written reply from the council stated: "Leitrim County Council are aware of the flooding at this location on the R202 and are investigating the issue. We hope to carry remedial works to alleviate the flooding under the departments 2026 drainage grants.”

Cllr McGowan also tabled a motion in relation to the need for improved road markings on the Dromod-Mohill road (R202).

“I’ve had a number of calls from road users complaining about poor road markings on this very busy road."

Speaking at the meeting, Cllr McGowan said that the road is “windy, twisty and a busy road.”

The possibility of cats eyes being installed on the road was then discussed. District Engineer Emma Donohue said that, “installing cats eyes would come down to resources.”

"The R-202-6 at Gortnalamp is on the RMG programme for 2026. Once Surface dressing is completed, this section will be line marked. Retroreflective markers (road studs) will be installed if budgets allow."
