Munster Technological University (MTU) is launching a higher education programme for adults with intellectual disabilities and learning difficulties at its Kerry campus in Tralee this month. The certificate in Personal and Professional Development for Employability and Further Studies will give ten students the chance to earn a two-year, part-time Level 5 qualification while participating fully in university life. Delivered through MTU’s EmpowerEd programme, the course is funded under Path 4 Phase 2 of the Government’s National Access Plan. The curriculum combines academic, personal and career development. Students will complete modules in advocacy, human rights and personal development, and there'll be choices in other subjects food and beverage preparation and culture, health and wellbeing. This follows a successful pilot programme which took place throughout the last academic year. Niamh O’Sullivan went to MTU to speak to parents, students, tutors and lecturers involved.
