A Virginia cat rescue group says it has faced its worst year yet, with a surge in stray cats and kittens putting huge pressure on its resources.

Maire Egan, founder of the Kitten Cottage, says the number of cats in the local areas has risen dramatically in recent years.

She believes the problem has been fuelled following Covid, which she says saw an increase in pet ownership, with unneutered cats now producing more litters.

It was noted that a cat can produce 18 kittens a year, making neutering essential for the health or the cat, kittens and controlling the population.

The Kitten Cottage has been in operation for nearly 30 years saving cats, equalling over 12,000 lives and counting.

The group is carrying out Trap Neuter Return programmes while also caring for sick, injured and vulnerable kittens.
