‘Get it over with’: Man fined for driving while on drugs

Jack Doyle, 23, with an address at St. Brendan’s Street, St. Mary’s Park, Limerick , came before Limerick District Court for driving while intoxicated.

As solicitors had withdrawn legal aid services as part of an industrial action, Mr Doyle opted to represent himself before Judge Patricia Harney, rather than adjourn his case to a time when free legal aid representation is once again made available in the District Court.

Garda evidence Prosecuting Sergeant Denis Waters detailed that Mr Doyle was stopped by Gardaí at the Grotto at St. Ita’s Street on August 27, 2024.

Gardaí took a specimen from Mr Doyle, which tested positive for cannabis.

Mr Doyle was convicted and disqualified from driving for a period of 12 months by Judge Harney. Mr Doyle was also fined €300 by the judge.

Judge Harney asked Mr Doyle if he wished to defer the imposition of the driving ban to a later date. Mr Doyle answered: “No, I’ll get it over with”.
